BEV SCHOFIELD

Born in Worcestershire, Bev attended Bournville College of Art and then Lanchester Art School in Coventry. She worked as an art teacher until the early 1990s when she decided to concentrate on painting full-time. Having initially participated in group shows and exhibitions, for the last 20 years she has preferred to work quietly, yet seriously, developing her painting mainly for her own interest.

As Bev explains, “although much of my work is based on still life, I tend to develop initial ideas through drawing, exploring compositional possibilities, abstracting and inventing until I have a starting point for a painting. My paintings tend to take shape slowly and often undergo changes until they begin to take on the sort of quality and balance that I’m after”.

“I'm conscious that there is always a kind of restraint in my paintings, particularly in terms of form and colour. I suppose that this is something I’m instinctively drawn to in the work of artists I admire. Paintings by Piero Della Francesca, Jan Vermeer or Ben Nicholson often have a stillness, a peacefulness about them, a sort of understated poetry and that’s what I’m after too.  It’s important to me that my work has a painterly quality which I then counterbalance with structured discipline.”
