MEET THE MAKER
Breon O'Casey (1928-2011)
The son of leading Irish playwright Sean O'Casey, Breon O'Casey was born into a creative family, discovering his passion for working with his hands from an early age. Moving to St Ives in 1959, he became assistant to sculptor Denis Mitchell, and later Barbara Hepworth, both of whom had a significant influence on his work. Working from his studio above the town, he was a prolific painter, printmaker, sculptor, weaver and jewellery maker throughout his life. He went on to become an important figure in 20th century British art and is known for his use of simple motifs and geometric shapes.
